About

The Cateneum

Cats have fascinated Internet users seemingly since early days of the World Wide Web. Meme submissions on the Cheezburger Network (Cheezburger.com) receives ten times more cat-related memes than dog-related memes. While YouTube users search more frequently for dogs than cats, videos of cats more frequently go viral than dog videos. Buzzfeed stories relating to cats average nine thousand views to dog articles’ five thousand (Thornton, 2013). In recent years, certain cats have even become minor celebrities including Grumpy Cat and Lil Bub.

The Cateneum collects historic items featuring cats that demonstrate human interest in cats is not a recent phenomenon.
