About this collection

The Kileen-Hemming Garden Seed Collection features seed packets from a gardening family in Wisconsin. The seeds are used in the family's kitchen garden, with the produce grown put to use by the family. The collection is named after the two gardeners who provided artifacts.

All seed packets in this collection contained seeds that were used to grow herbs, edible greens, and flowers in zones 5a and 5b according to the USDA Hardiness Zone Map. Seed packets are candidates for inclusion if they meet the following criteria:

  • Packets are mostly intact without rips or tears that interfere with legibility
  • Minimum amount of post-sale markings have been added to the packets
  • Items were purchased with the intent of using seeds for gardening in zones 5a or 5b
  • Seeds in the packets were successfully germinated

In addition to seed packets, the digital library includes links to websites of garden seed brands featured in the collection, links to gardening blogs that chronicle smale-scale home gardening in Wisconsin, and other media files (audio, video, photographic) that capture the sights and sounds of home gardens in the region.
